Scottish – Danish energy island cooperation ?

Another capacity Nordic Horizons meeting in the Scottish Parliament gathered to hear Soren Hermansen explain the transformation energy, community and feelings of self-reliance on Samsoe as a result of locally controlled wind energy projects. We’ve all heard the idea that “small is beautiful” but Soren demonstrated that “small and locally controlled is even more attractive.” Drew Ratter from Shetland explained how small has been hard to achieve in the Viking Wind Farm project (which is 50% owned by the municipality) because of high grid connection charges. Six members of the Scottish Parliament and more research staff were in the audience – which included people in Stornoway, Thurso, Elgin and Inverness by videolink. Reactions were mostly – what an inspiring speaker and a brilliant event.
